Apple decided to show its power once again by changing the rules of its App Store. Any iOS apps that sell anything (including music subscription services) must give Apple 30% of whatever they charge.
This would be a huge amount of revenue if companies like Spotify, Napster, Rhapsody, and MOG didn’t remove all purchasing parts of their apps.
Rdio, however, decided to bite the bullet and hand over 30% of its increased price to Apple. Instead of the normal $10 subscription fee, the company increased it to $15 for iOS subscribers. It makes little difference financially to them, but we’ll see if users are so frustrated with the increase in price that they decided to go to another service all together.
What do you think will happen? Will potential Rdio subscribers pay the $15?
Will Apple see how many companies (like Amazon, as well) removed all commerce from their apps and just change the rules back?
