While I assume the majority of my readers aren’t signed to any sort of major label, (but if you are, congratulations!) this story can give a good idea of what to look out for. Universal Music Group’s Legal Department has apparently been sending out cease and desist letters to a number of Twitter accounts that have been sharing links to a free download of The Dream’s latest album. The issue with this, though, is that many of these links are pointing to the download that is located on the artists official website!

Music Ally points out that the legal and marketing departments must have their signals crossed in this situation.

What can an independent artist take away from this? Make sure everyone you work with is on the same page, and you have open communication. You don’t need something simple like this to ruin your career.
