A must-read for all self-promotors is the Billboard.biz recap of the 2011 CMJ panel, “Blogfamous.” Some of the main points in the article are crucial for bands with a digital marketing campaign (which should be all of you).
- While blog coverage is very important, it is not the be-all and end-all of digital promotion. It is necessary to leverage this coverage into album and ticket sales if you’re looking to get the attention of a label.
- When pitching to blogs, you need to realize that the band is a bRand. Have a press kit, blog, photos, etc. Blogs need all of the information you have, not a partial story. Do you want them having to guess at facts? Not only will lack of facts usually mean no story, if there is a story it won’t be to its full potential.
- Placements should be a part of your overall promotional campaign.
